Why Savvy Pet Care Is Finding Its Focus
If you’ve been following Savvy Pet Care for a while, you may have noticed that my recent posts have had a common theme: cats…and especially raw feeding.
That isn’t by accident.
In many ways, it’s the natural evolution of how Savvy Pet Care began.
When I first started this website, I was working as a professional pet sitter. Every day was different. One morning I might be caring for dogs, the next afternoon feeding parrots, and later that evening visiting cats, rabbits, or horses. I was constantly learning from the animals I cared for and from the people who loved them.
Those experiences gave me plenty of stories to tell and practical tips to share, so Savvy Pet Care naturally became a place to write about many different aspects of pet care.
Life has a way of changing, though.
When I retired from pet sitting, my daily experiences changed too. I was no longer spending my days caring for a wide variety of animals. Instead, my focus shifted to the animals already sharing my home—my cats.
What didn’t change was my love of learning.
In fact, it deepened.
Over 16 years ago, I made the decision to begin feeding my cats a homemade raw diet. It wasn’t because it was trendy. It was because one of my own cats was struggling with digestive problems, and I was searching for something that might help.
That single decision led me down a path of constant learning.
Over the years I’ve prepared thousands of pounds of homemade cat food. I’ve fed kittens, adults, seniors, former feral cats, foster cats, and cats with different personalities and nutritional needs. I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, how to simplify the process, and how to adapt when life throws unexpected challenges my way.
One of those challenges was evacuating during a California wildfire. Suddenly I needed emergency food for my cats, and that experience taught me another valuable lesson: how to safely can homemade raw food for emergency situations. Experiences like that don’t come from reading a book—they come from living this lifestyle year after year.
Looking back, I realized something.
While I still enjoy many aspects of pet care, the subject I know best—and the one I’m most passionate about helping others with—is feeding cats a healthy, homemade raw diet.
Rather than trying to write a little bit about everything, I’d rather go much deeper into the topic where I can offer the most practical, real-world experience.
So that’s the direction Savvy Pet Care will be taking.
You’ll still occasionally see posts about other cat-related topics because nutrition isn’t the only part of caring for a cat. But you’ll also be seeing much more about:
- Getting started with raw feeding
- Homemade raw recipes
- Ingredients and supplements
- Common myths and misconceptions
- Food preparation and storage
- Lessons I’ve learned over more than 16 years
- Real-life successes, mistakes, and problem-solving along the way
My goal has never been to convince everyone to feed raw.
My goal is to help people who are curious feel less overwhelmed, more informed, and more confident in making the best decisions for their own cats.
I’m also excited to share that I’m currently working on a comprehensive raw feeding e-book that brings together many of the lessons I’ve learned over the years. If you’ve been thinking about making the switch to homemade raw food—or you’ve tried before and felt overwhelmed—I think you’ll find it helpful.
Finally, I’d love to hear from you.
Are you already feeding raw? Are you simply curious? Is there a topic you’ve always wanted someone to explain in plain English?
Leave a comment below or send me an email. Your questions often become the inspiration for future articles, and I’d love to know what you’d like to learn next.
Thank you for being part of the Savvy Pet Care community. I’m looking forward to this next chapter, and I’m glad you’re coming along with me.
